How To Cure Hypothyroidism & Fibromyalgia

Updated on August 4, 2011

Millions of people have hypothyroidism, and many of these people also have the condition known as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a condition consisting of widespread pain, chronic fatigue, headaches, brain fog, and many other symptoms. When I first began seeing patients with fibromyalgia over eight years ago, many medical doctors would turn these people away, sometimes telling these people their symptoms were psychological. Fortunately, more medical doctors currently realize that fibromyalgia is a real condition, even if all of the blood tests come out negative.

This of course doesn't mean that doctors have a better idea of how to treat someone with fibromyalgia. At least with hypothyroidism they can give synthetic thyroid hormone. And while this does nothing for the actual cause of the hypothyroid condition, in many people it will help to manage the symptoms. But with fibromyalgia, most medical doctors will prescribe drugs, which not only doesn’t do anything for the cause of fibromyalgia, but they also do a poor job of managing their symptoms in most cases.

And to make matters worse, when someone has both hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia, some medical doctors think the person's symptoms are solely due to the hypothyroid condition. So they will give the person synthetic thyroid hormone to manage the thyroid condition, but this most likely won't help at all with the fibromyalgia symptoms. If the person is "lucky" they will be prescribed some pain pills and other medication to help with the symptoms, but sometimes the person is just told to live with the pain, fatigue, and other symptoms.

Many Cases Of Hypothyroidism And Fibromyalgia Can Be Cured

While most doctors label both hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia as being incurable, many people with these conditions can have their health restored back to normal through a natural treatment protocol. With regards to hypothyroidism, not everyone can have their condition cured, but on the other hand, many people who were told to take thyroid hormone for the rest of their life can have their thyroid health restored. This by no means is an easy process, but for someone who is willing to take responsibility for their own health it is very possible.

As for fibromyalgia, people with this condition can also have their health restored back to normal, although like hypothyroidism, doing so can be a challenge. The reason why it's not easy to restore the health of these people is because it usually takes a long time for these conditions to develop in the first place. With hypothyroidism, most doctors focus on the thyroid gland itself, but in most cases the thyroid gland is not the actual cause of the condition, as something else usually causes the thyroid gland to malfunction. A common cause of this is weak adrenal glands, as many people have problems with their adrenals, which will frequently lead to a hypothyroid state.

Weak adrenals can also play a big role in fibromyalgia, especially with the fatigue people commonly experience. Weak adrenal glands are common due to poor eating habits, insufficient sleep, and poor stress handling skills. All of these will affect the hormones insulin and cortisol, as it will cause secretion of these hormones, which over a prolonged period of time can stress out the adrenal glands.

So how can one cure hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia? In order to accomplish this, one needs to do the following:

1. Restore the person's adrenal health. Unfortunately there is no magic pill to restore one's adrenal health back to normal. In order to accomplish this one needs to minimize their consumption of refined foods and sugars, obtain at least seven to eight hours sleep each night (and ideally more than this), and they will need to do a better job of handling the stress in their life. In addition to this they probably will need some adrenal support in the form of certain nutritional supplements and herbs. Restoring adrenal health does take time, but even in cases of severe adrenal exhaustion this is possible.

2. Correct any hormone imbalances. Many people with hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia have a hormone imbalance that is contributing to their condition. This is yet another area where most medical doctors overlook, yet it's a common issue with these conditions. By obtaining a hormone panel, one can see the levels of estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, and some other important hormones which can affect thyroid health, and also contribute to the symptoms of fibromyalgia. For example, many people with hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia have a progesterone deficiency. This is why giving these people natural progesterone sometimes works wonders. However, while natural progesterone can help, the obvious goal should be to correct the progesterone deficiency, rather than take any bioidentical hormone for the rest of your life.

3. Minimize exposure to environmental toxins. Certain environmental toxins can create many health issues. Most of the toxins we're exposed to are the ones we bring into our homes. The foods we eat, household cleaners and cosmetics, and many other things we buy contain toxins which negatively affect our health. While we can't eliminate all of these toxins, most people can do a much better job of minimizing their exposure to them.

4. Don't rely on the blood tests. While blood tests can be extremely valuable, it's important not to rely on the blood tests alone. This is especially true with fibromyalgia, where all blood tests taken are usually negative. But even with hypothyroidism one can't completely rely on the blood test results. There have been many cases where a person had obvious hypothyroid symptoms, and yet the thyroid blood tests came out negative. Sometimes this has to do with inaccurate reference ranges, but sometimes this isn't the case. The point is that one can't disregard a person's symptoms just because the blood tests are negative.

5. Seek the advice of a natural endocrine doctor. Although it might be tempting to treat these conditions on your own, it's best to consult with an expert. While you might think you can simply visit a health food store and take nutritional supplements and herbs to cure your condition, there is an excellent chance this won't help much. If you want to receive optimal results, you really should speak with an expert. This way they can fully evaluate your condition, and put you on an individualized treatment plan.

In summary, while it is possible to cure hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia in many people, doing so is not an easy process. Those people looking for a quick and easy cure will be greatly disappointed. On the other hand, those who realize it will take time to accomplish this and are willing to take responsibility for their health will have a greater chance of receiving excellent results.
